Bible Notes Online - Psalms 47 - ESV
Commentary

Praise God for His character as king.

v1: Rejoicing and praising; the invitation to all nations, to recognise that God is king over all the earth. The praise of God comes with noise, Ps 9.2; 81.1-2; 150.5.

v2-4: Our God is awesome, He has authority. Ultimately, that authority will be manifest, as all things will be made subject to Him; we do not yet see all things subject to Him (Heb 2.8).

In 1 Chr 22.18, David spoke of his victory over the peoples; a foretaste of Rev 20.4. There is a special blessing upon Israel, for all nations will be subject under one nation, Zech 14.4; Rev 20.4-6. Our inheritance is God's choice; He will bring us into this.

v5-6: A second invitation to bring praise to God; prefiguring Christ's ascension, with shouts of joy.

v7: "A psalm of praise", or 'with understanding.' The psalmist has presented good reasons for praising God; we respond by making a decision to praise God.

v8: God's reign over all nations. There is no doubt about this.

v9: The people of God who have identified with Him. He is the God of Abraham, the God of the Hebrew people, and the God of those who live by faith.
