Bible Notes Online - Numbers 4 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Of the 22,000 males who were Levites, those 30-50 years old were to serve in the work of the Tabernacle. This work required maturity. The total, 8580 (v48), was around 40% of the total.

v4-15: Some tasks were solely for Aaron and his sons. All the items in the Tabernacle itself were for them to take down. The different items were all covered, but in different ways;

  • The Ark of the Testimony; hides of sea cows (or badger skins), then blue cloth (v5-6);
  • Table; blue cloth, then scarlet, then hides of sea cows (v7-8);
  • Lampstand; blue cloth, then hides of sea cows (v9-10);
  • Gold altar; blue cloth, then hides of sea cows (v11);
  • Articles for serving in the sanctuary; blue cloth, then hides of sea cows (v12);
  • Bronze altar; purple cloth, then hides of sea cows (v13-14).
  • The Ark, being the only item with a blue outer covering, would therefore stand out; this was a declaration of the very presence of God with His people.
  • The hides of sea cows would have been like leather, and waterproof, providing protection for all the items used for the worship of God. This points to Christ's separation; undefiled, holy, blameless, separate from sinners.

v15-20: Aaron and his sons were the only ones who were allowed to touch, or even look upon, the items from within the Tabernacle. The Kohathites had to be very careful, "or they will die". The work of even carrying the Tabernacle was something serious, and could not be taken lightly. Eleazar, the older son of Aaron, who would become the next High Priest, oversaw their work.

v21-28: See 3.21-26. The service of the Gershonites, under the direction of Ithamar, the younger son of Aaron.

v29-33: See 3.33-37. The service of the Merarites, also under the direction of Ithamar. There is the instruction to “assign to each man the specific things he is to carry.” Thus each one had a clear responsibility to fulfil.

v34-49: The family groups were counted; Kohath 2750; Gershon 2630, Merari 3200. This made up the total of 8580. Note that the counting was as the Lord had commanded; thus the order of worship was fully established by God.
