Bible Notes Online - Numbers 34 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: The command to occupy the whole land of Canaan. The fulfilment of the promises over many years had become very close. The spiritual application is that we should occupy all that God has for us. The inheritance is something to enjoy and experience.

v3-5: The southern border was from the Salt Sea (Dead Sea) to the Mediterranean, taking in a large portion of desert.

v6: The western border was the Mediterranean Sea, or the Great Sea. This meant that the area of Canaan included the land of the Philistines. The Israelites had he responsibility to dispossess this people (see 33.55), and failure to do so would lead to problems.

v11-12: The eastern border ran from the Sea of Kinnereth (Lake Galilee), along the Jordan river to the Dead Sea (or Salt Sea). This excluded the area occupied by Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh. Thus, 9½ tribes occupied the land of Canaan.

v14-15: The 2½ tribes had received their inheritance. They had settled for something less than the best.

v16-28: Moses gave Joshua and Eleazar the responsibility to oversee the allotment of the land. Being consistent, only those tribes receiving an inheritance in Canaan were invited to share in this task. The Lord actually selected the leaders from the tribes; He had not chosen the twelve spies.

Note also that only Caleb and Joshua were left from the list in 13.4-15, fulfilling God's promise that they would enter the land.
