v1-2: The Lord had ensured that the journey from Egypt to Canaan was recorded. This chapter lists the route they travelled. The places mentioned were not settlements, but simply named places, perhaps oases or mountains. The Lord said that no one lived there (Jer 2.6).
v3-4: The deliverance from Egypt is strikingly described; the Israelites left Rameses, marching out boldly, the Lord having executed judgment on the Egyptian gods, and killed the first born.
v7-8: See Ex 14.2,9. From Etham, Pi Hahiroth, to Marah.
v9: See Ex 15.27. A place of testing followed by a place of fruitfulness; such is the mercy of God.
v11: See Ex 16.1.They camped in the Desert of Sin.
v14: See Ex 17.1.They came to Rephidim.
v16: See 10.12; 11.34. They arrived at Kibroth Hattaavah, a place of rebellion against the Lord.
v17: See 11.35. The journey to Hazeroth.
v18-35: These verse describe the 38 years of wandering in the wilderness.
v36: See 20.1. The return to Kadesh, see 13.26; this was where they camped, in the Desert of Paran, while the spies explored the land of Canaan.
v37-39: See 20.22. Aaron's death.
v48-49: See 31.12; they camped in the plains of Moab for several months.
v51: The next journey was across the Jordan into Canaan. Moses had a responsibility to prepare the people for this.
v52: The instructions were clear; they had to be ruthless with the Canaanite peoples. "Drive out ALL...destroy ALL...demolish ALL."
v53-54: The people were to divide up the land by lot.
v55-56: Any failure to obey God in these things would bring difficulty. The Canaanite peoples left would cause problems for the Israelites, and God Himself would punish them. God gives us the strength to deal with personal sins, but we have the responsibility to break with them.
