Bible Notes Online - Nehemiah 12 - ESV
Commentary

v1-9: The list of priests and Levites who had returned with Zerubbabel. These are included within the lists at Ezra 2.36-40.

v10-11: The genealogy, providing a link between the Levites of Zerubbabel's time, and those of Nehemiah's time.

v12-21: The next generation of priests, sons of those priests listed at v1-7. Only Hattush (v2) was childless. This provided a succession of priests, which should have maintained the righteous standards set by Zerubbabel and Jeshua.

v22-26: Referring to v10-11, and the period covered by four generations, the names of the family heads of the Levites were recorded. The different roles of the Levites were also recorded; some gave praise and thanksgiving, and others were the gatekeepers guarding the storerooms.

v27-30: Singing and music at the dedication of the wall. Although the singers did not live in Jerusalem, they had built themselves villages around the city. It seems this exclusivity was related to conflict between singers and priests. The singers had demanded greater recognition in their role.

v31-43: The celebration at the completion of the wall. The wall preserved fellowship within, and protected from enemies outside, Ps 48.12-14.

Nehemiah organised the worship, with two choirs walking around the wall. The actual leading of singing and praising was for the Levites, and Nehemiah followed one of the choirs.

They rejoiced because God had given them cause to rejoice. All that had happened was God's work.

v44-47: As in v24-25, there were different responsibilities for the priests. The pattern set down by David was continued. There was also provision made for the priests and Levites.
