Bible Notes Online - Leviticus 22 - ESV
Commentary

v2: Just as the Israelites had to be separate from the peoples (ch 18-20), so the priests had to treat with proper respect the holy things of God.

v3-9: The priest had to be strict with himself, as the representative of the people. He had to carefully watch his own behaviour, and the things that happened to him. Some things that would make him unclean would genuinely be 'someone else's fault', but even so he would be guilty. He must therefore avoid any complacency. This was serious, in that they could be cut off from the people (v3), or even die (v9).

v17-25: The people were not to offer any animal with a defect; this is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the offering without blemish. In Mal 1.7-8, this command was broken, as the people offered the lame and the sick; in this way they dishonoured God. What we offer to God must reflect His perfect character.

However, in respect of a free-will offering a concession was allowed, in that an animal with some small defect could be offered.

v31-33: As we have seen previously, the writer includes these "summary" comments, giving the clear reason why the various rules are laid down. The Lord is holy, and His people are to be holy too. God brought the people out of Egypt to be holy, and to be His people.
