Bible Notes Online - Joshua 8 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: The attack upon Ai was resumed. Sin had been dealt with, and victory was now possible. Indeed, God had promised victory. This time, spoil could be taken from the city.

v3-8: On the previous occasion, 3000 men attacked Ai. This time a much larger number were involved. We must not attribute victory to numbers, or to human strength, for God gives the victory. God did not give the detailed strategy, for Joshua announced that.

The different situation required a different strategy (compare 2 Sam 5.17-25), but still obedience to God's ways. In all things we must be obedient to God, which demands flexibility to various situations.

v9-10: Joshua was clearly the leader; he directed the troops, he slept with the people, and he organised his men.

v11-13:The trap was set, with Joshua’s men split into three groups.

v14-17: The success of Joshua’s ruse; all the people of Ai left the city.

v18-23: The battle followed the expected pattern, as the people of Ai left the city. The Lord God gave the instruction for Joshua to spring the ambush at the right time. Joshua obeyed this direction, and the victory was won.

v24-29: The victory was won, and the people totally destroyed. There was a thoroughness in completing the task God had given.

In times of success as well as in times of joy, we are to find our hope in God. Give my neither poverty nor riches, as Solomon says (Prov 30.8).

v30-34: Fulfilment of Deut 27.12-13. Ebal and Gerizim were not far from Bethel and Ai, towards Shechem.

v34-35: Joshua read the Law of God to the people. This would have reminded the people that their priority was obedience to God.
