Bible Notes Online - Joshua 13 - ESV
Commentary

Chapters 13-24; "Occupying the land." The book moves into a second section.

v1: There was much work to be done, The major victories had been won. But "very large areas of land" had still to be possessed, mainly around the edges of what Israel had captured to this point.

v2-3: The Philistines were considered to be Canaanites; they were descendants of Ham and Mizraim. For centuries they were a thorn in the side of Israel, because they were not properly dealt with.

The writer refers to the five rulers of the Philistines; see also 1 Sam 6.17, an incident some centuries later.

v6-7: God had promised to drive out all the inhabitants, and that would happen. But Israel had a part to play in seeing that this was fulfilled. The land was to be divided up before all the enemies were defeated. The responsibility then fell to each tribe to occupy their inheritance. This speaks of our individually taking on what God has in store for us.

v8-32: The area east of Jordan was described, as divided between Reuben (v15-23) and Gad (v24-28), and the half tribe of Manasseh (v29-31). We read that Moses, not God, gave them this inheritance, v15, 24, 29; 14.3.

In v13, some Gentiles remained in the portion occupied east of the Jordan; see Deut 3.14; Israel had not fully taken their land. This issue recurs in Judges 1, where pockets of Canaanites remained in th eland west of the Jordan.
