Bible Notes Online - Job 28 - ESV
Commentary

v1-8: Precious metals, silver and gold, and useful metals, iron and copper; they are found by man's ingenuity and effort. Until then they are hidden and unseen.

v9-11: Great effort is required to extract minerals, and such effort is rewarded.

v12: Having spoken of mineral extraction, Job turns to the matter of spiritual wisdom. This is also unseen and hidden, but men spend so little effort to seek it for themselves.

v13-14: Man does not appreciate the truth worth of spiritual wisdom. It is not found with searching.

v15-19: Wisdom cannot be purchased with gold, even the gold of Ophir or the topaz of Cush (Ethiopia, or Nubia).

v20-28: Wisdom is hidden from the eyes of all living; only God knows its source, for such wisdom comes only from Him (James 3.15, 17). God created wisdom, He saw it, declared it, and prepared it.

Job defines spiritual wisdom, as in Prov 1.7, 9-10; an attitude of fear towards God, the evidence of a life of practical godliness. This is the only basis for godly living, in any age.

Job has come full circle from 27.4-6; real wisdom must also be our aim.
