v1-2: The problem, “only a few are left.” The defeat by Babylon, with repeated removal of people into exile, followed by in-fighting, had severely reduced their numbers. The only answer was prayer, “pray to the Lord your God for this entire remnant.”
In the church, small, despised by the world, too often prone to fighting amongst ourselves; how we need to pray!
Jeremiah was the intercessor, praying for those who would not pray for themselves.
v3: The need for guidance, ‘which way should we go?’ There is a clear principle; we must ask God, and obey His answer.
v4: Jeremiah’s commitment to pray and to bring God’s word; indeed, he had always prayed for the people, and he had always declared the word of God to them.
v5-6: The people committed themselves to obey the word declared by Jeremiah.
v7: The delayed answer; a test of faithfulness and obedience. The number ten is linked with our responsibility to obey (as in the Ten Commandments).
Saul went astray when Samuel delayed his arrival (1 Sam 13.8); human impatience can lead us to act in a sinful way. God’s timing is not the same as ours.
v8-12: Jeremiah delivered the word of God to the people. The word to the remnant was to stay in the land, not to fear the king of Babylon (see note at 41.18). The Lord promised them safety if they stayed in the land.
Verse 10 contains key words characteristic of Jeremiah’s ministry; build, tear down, plant, uproot (see 1.10).
v13-16: If the people refused to obey and, in particular, they went to Egypt, they would suffer and die there. Obedience can be costly, disobedience doubly so.
The word foreshadowed the people’s determination to flee to Egypt.
v17-18: If they went to Egypt, the same death they sought to avoid, sword, famine, pestilence (27.13) would follow them. Jeremiah saw their heart of defiance.
v19-20: They were hypocrites in their heart; when they asked Jeremiah to pray, and declared their desire to obey, they were never truly willing to obey God’s words.
v21-22: The word of God, which they promised to obey, exposed their disobedience.
