Bible Notes Online - Isaiah 19 - ESV
Commentary

v1-4: Egypt's religion; idolatry, spiritism, magicians and wise men, as in v11-12. All this would prove useless before Almighty God. He would stir up internal strife in Egypt, to bring them down. Their cruelty towards the Israelites would be returned upon them. Assyria would come against Egypt, and rule over them.

v5-10: Judgment upon Egypt, centred upon the river Nile, which was essential for their well-being. Farmers and fishermen will suffer, along with other trades not directly related to the river.

v11-15: The magicians of Egypt, key to their life and religion, prove useless. As in 9.14-16, it is the leaders who fail. They failed to predict what was about to happen, and they were impotent to affect it.

v16-17: As a result of God's judgment, Egypt will begin to fear the Lord, and to fear Judah. This fear is not God's judgment, but the beginning of the restoration of Egypt, following God's judgment. Egypt will begin to be subject to Judah.

v18-22: The witness to the true God in Egypt; five cities declaring allegiance to the Lord God, an altar, answers to prayer, worship and sacrifices, such that many in Egypt will turn to the Lord and believe in Him.

v23-25 Restoration of Egypt and Assyria with Israel. This contrasts with Assyria's attack on Egypt (v4); that ancient enmity will be replaced by strong relationship.
