Bible Notes Online - Isaiah 17 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Isaiah turned his face towards Damascus. This city had great history, but would be brought low.

v4-6: Fruitfulness lost, leaving only a remnant; their glory shall wane, their fatness grow lean.

v7-8: The danger of idolatry, making God in our own image. Through their suffering, they would reject idolatry as impotent.

v9: Their strong cities left desolate.

v10-11: In spite of initial blessings, they forgot God (Deut 32.15); this may have been gradual, see Mark 4.19. Salvation is given, enormous privilege enjoyed (1 Cor 10.4), but their love for God cooled. Life continued perhaps with a form of religion, and even service, but without reference to God.

The words here, although aimed at Damascus, are reminiscent of Isaiah's opening words to Israel and Judah (ch 1-5).

v12-14: Their reliance upon human strength did not impress God. There was rushing, mighty, waters, but as nothing before God. These verses appear to refer to Aram's attack upon Judah; but like Moab, they are suddenly taken away.
