Bible Notes Online - Genesis 47 - ESV
Commentary

v5-6: Pharaoh welcomed Joseph's family, giving them the best of the land. Later they would impoverish the land of Egypt, by taking their valuables.

v7-10: The meeting of Jacob and Pharaoh. Jacob testified to a hard life, lasting 130 years. He blessed Pharaoh (see Heb 7.7).

v13-21: Joseph's increasing dominion over the people of Egypt; a picture of Christ's dominion over all things. He first collected all the money (v14), then the livestock (v17), then the land (v20).The people were reduced to servitude (v21), and were moved from one part of Egypt to another (v21 margin), but this saved their lives. No one had greater wisdom than Joseph (41.39).

v23-24: Once the people were servants, they would do what Joseph commanded. A new practice was also introduced, that the people would give a portion to Pharaoh. (v26 also)

v25: "You have saved our lives". The people realised the truth that submission brought life. They were happy to be directed by Joseph, and owned by Pharaoh.

v27: The family of Jacob increased greatly. This was to become a problem to the Egyptians later (Ex1.7-10).

v28-29: The names "Israel" and "Jacob" are used at different times; indicating the struggle between old and new, between spiritual and carnal; see also 46.1-6.

v29-30: Jacob's home was never really Egypt. He gave instructions to be buried in Canaan.
