Bible Notes Online - Ezekiel 39 - ESV
Commentary

v1-10: See Zech 14.12-15; Rev 19.15-21; 20.7-10. This battle precedes Christ's 1000 year reign, as the glory of God is displayed in the earth.

v1: The large army, as in 38.9.

v2: Although the attack is from Gog, inspired by the devil, we see that God is in ultimate control.

v3-5: The whole army is destroyed in Israel.

v6-8: All nations shall see the power of God. Israel too will see this; being part of her process of discipline. All the events point to the glory and power of God.

v9-10: Israel will spend 7 years gathering the weapons, such is the size of the army, and the volume of equipment carried, and the scale of the defeat of Gog.

v11-16: The dead are buried, requiring 7 months, to cleanse the land. Again, an indication of the size of the army arraigned against Israel.

v17-20: See Rev 19.17-18: perhaps a description of the same event.

v21-22: From that day, all nations will see that the Lord is God; but Israel in particular will see that he is God.

v23-24: The earlier judgment against Israel, Is 64.7, of which they will become ashamed; this judgment now ended. This sign is also to the Gentiles.

v25-26: Israel restored, her judgment ended; on that day they will have borne their shame.

v27-29: The final restoration of Israel, never to be reversed; the Spirit is poured; the God's people enjoy the full salvation of Christ. Israel will not merely survive, but will be gloriously restored.
