v1-4: In Jer 49.7-22, judgment is announced on Edom, here called Mount Seir. v13 indicates that Mount Seir was part of Edom.
Judgment expected, desolation promised.
v5-6: The jealousy of the Lord for His people, see 36.9. Seir had maintained the ancient hatred, and killed many in Israel; see also 25.12-14. It seems that Seir is singled out specifically here, as she was Israel’s nearest neighbour. It seems that Edom held a particular hatred towards Israel, quite different to the aggressive attitude of Assyria and Babylon.
v7-9: Mount Seir to be perpetually desolate, enjoying no mercy, Jer 49.13,18. The same sword seen in Is 6.3 is now directed at Edom.
v10-15: See Obad 10-14.
v10: Seir's ambition was to occupy Judah and Israel. Even though Judah and Israel had rebelled against, He remained jealous of His own, and committed to protecting them
v11: Their attitude was one of anger and jealousy.
v12: Seir's antagonism against Israel.
v13: The attack against Israel is a blasphemy against the Lord Himself.
v14-15: While Seir rejoiced in the suffering of others, so the whole world will rejoice as Seir suffers. In this way, God is made known in the earth.
