Bible Notes Online - Ezekiel 32 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Egypt the monster in the seas, see 29.3. This introduces Ezekiel's lament for Egypt, v3-15.

v3-8: The great army attacking Egypt, bringing devastation upon the nation. See 31.13.

v9-10: See 31.15-17; the hearts of many will be troubled over Egypt's defeat.

Like the wise men of Esth 1.13, we must understand the times, taking note of events around us, and learning from them.

v11-12: Babylon, the most ruthless of all nations, 31.12.

v13-15: Egypt to be left desolate, 29.11-12. The illustration here has echoes of Prov 14.4. With life and growth is mess; here muddied waters were a proof of a herd of cattle. In human life, not everything is tidy or neat, but there are often loose ends. That is not necessarily an indication of something wrong.

v16: The lament is not restricted to Ezekiel. He is writing words for many to use.

v17-18: The hordes of Egypt, see v12, 16; the abundance of the nation gives way to barrenness.

v19-20: Egypt's claim was that she was more favoured, it was "proud of its height" (31.10), but all this comes to nothing.

v21: The mighty leaders of Egypt, like its people, consigned to the grave.

v22-32: Egypt lies with the uncircumcised, many nations who had spread terror in the land of the living, Assyria, Elam, Meshech and Tubal, although slightly different words are used to describe Sidon and Edom. Ultimately God had allowed one nation to bring terror on another; thus there was judgment upon the earth as well as in the grave.
