Bible Notes Online - Ezekiel 12 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: This introduces a section, to chapter 19, of prophetic actions, and declarations. The rebellious house, see 2.5-7; the word ‘rebellious’ is repeated a number of times, emphasizing the defining characteristic of the nation.

v3-6: Ezekiel the sign to Israel; compare Is 8.18. He used this style of communication in chapters 4 and 5. The sign is given even if the people refuse to hear the word. God later commanded that he give the explanation also, v10-16.

v7-9: Ezekiel obeyed the word of God. The people were understandably curious, wanting to know the meaning of his actions.

v10-11: The message specifically concerns the people of Jerusalem. No one could claim it was something that was not relevant.

v12-14: Fulfilled in Zedekiah, Jer 52.8,11.

v15-16: A very few left, so that those surviving might acknowledge God's hand upon them. An indication, too, of God’s mercy.

v17-20: A further sign, that the people would be in fear.

v21-23: The lie challenged;

  • "the days go by," becomes "the days are near;"
  • "every vision comes to nothing," becomes "every vision will be fulfilled."

The people alleged that Ezekiel's words, and presumably the words of other prophets, were for the far future, eg: Is 39.8.

v24-25: Judgment no longer delayed, as God Himself will put the false proverb to rest.

v26-28: The claim, and the answer, repeated, this time without proverb, but presented quite explicitly. The sinful human attitude is not to apply God's word immediately or personally, but generally.
