Bible Notes Online - Esther 9 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Haman apparently had a number of allies throughout the empire; these were "the enemies of the Jews"; they shared Haman's desire to destroy them. However, the opposite happened, and their plans were overturned, Neh 4.4; Deut 19.18-19.

v2-10: The Jews killed their enemies; their motivation seems to have been self-preservation rather than revenge. They killed the ten sons of Haman.

However, the Jews did not claim any plunder; they had no desire to gain materially from the situation, they simply gathered together and protected themselves.

Through the incident, the reputation of Mordecai grew. Like Joseph and Daniel, he was promoted to high position in a Gentile kingdom.

v11-16: Throughout the empire, some 75,000 were killed.

v17: On the day after their victory, there was a day of celebration. This became an annual festival.

v18-19: Since those Jews in Susa had an additional day, to defeat their enemies, and to hang the bodies of Haman's sons, their annual day was a day later than those elsewhere in the empire.

v20-22: Mordecai sent messages to the Jews throughout the empire, instructing them to remember the events each year. They would give presents to each other, and enjoy feasting together.

v23-28: The annual festival was established. These words may be part of the text of Mordecai's letter, as it summarises the events of the book of Esther. Note that v27 refers to people becoming Jews, see 8.17.

v29-32: Mordecai's letter was confirmed by Esther's decree.
