Bible Notes Online - Esther 5 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Esther approached the king. He held out the golden sceptre to her, accepting her into his presence. He was very generous, wanting to give Esther something, 'Don't be afraid to ask!'

Our God is more willing to hear our prayers than we are to pray them.

v4-8: Esther's request was that both the king and Haman eat with her. Any accusation against Haman would have to be strongly-based, and clearly presented, since he was well respected by the king. The timing of the request was also important, and Esther had to bide her time.

This incident begins to show contrast between the character of Esther and Haman. Esther is humble, cautious, slow to command; hence 'tomorrow.' Haman is arrogant, controlling, selfish.

Esther's request that the King and Haman attend a meal was culturally appropriate. There was no awkwardness nor provocation. The difficult part of exposing Haman's scheme, would follow.

v9-14: Haman's hatred of Mordecai was such that all his privileges gave him no satisfaction. He was a man of pride, seeking self-promotion, and was prepared to destroy anyone in his way.

He rejoiced in himself, his riches, his children, his status; compare Is 14.13. Even as Satan is the enemy of Jesus Christ, all his power avails nothing since Christ is alive; ultimately, Christ will be victorious, see 6.13.

The 'gallows' may refer to being impaled or crucified. So, Mordecai avoided being crucified.
