Bible Notes Online - Ecclesiastes 6 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: An observation, another evil. A man cannot enjoy his possessions, even though he has worked to gain them.

v3-6: A large family and long life; things sought by men, and even worshipped, but meaningless in the light of death. We must be cautious about gaining anything in this life, and our hold must not be tight. The writer says that the "stillborn child" is better off than one who has gained much.

v7-9: Man works to eat, but the soul must also be satisfied, and that can only be in God, for an emphasis on material things can never truly satisfy. Many experience the"roving of the appetite" ('the wandering of desire'), which always finds itself dissatisfied. Better is the poor man who has learned to walk wisely.

v10-11: Man is unable to change himself.

v12: This chapter speaks of the 'rat race,' the normal human pursuit of material comfort and riches, to the neglect of his soul.
