Bible Notes Online - Deuteronomy 30 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Following the fulfilment of 28.64, where the people are scattered throughout the earth, there is a restoration promised to a repentant people. The Lord can gather them from wherever there are, since He knows where each one is (v4). Greater blessings than before will fall upon the people (v5).

v6: Contrast 29.4, and see Jer 31.33. This verse refers to a spiritual restoration, not merely a geographical restoration. Only God can give a new heart.

v7: Additionally, God will put the curses that fell on Israel on those who oppose them.

v8-10: The Lord will delight to prosper His returning people.

v11-14: The word was given for obedience, not for debate. The covenant of God brought the standards of God to mankind; it is not mysterious, nor far off, but "very near you", so that they might obey, and receive abundant blessing. Paul quotes these verses in Rom 10.5-10, applying it to knowing Christ.

To the Israelites were committed the oracles of God (Rom 3.2). In Christ, we receive the word of faith, that we might believe, for it is not possible to do all things commanded in the law.

v15-20: The choice is made plain; to reject God, His covenant and commands, is to reject life itself. The promises of cursing are just as sure as the promises of blessing. Further, we cannot fool God into thinking we are being obedient when we are not.
