Bible Notes Online - 2-Samuel 4 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Within Saul's, now Ishbosheth's, army where other leaders seeking position. Baanah and his brother Recab are named as two. Like Abner they were captains in the army.

v4: Mephibosheth was another of Saul's line who survived. He was still young. His nurse had dropped he upon receiving news of Jonathan's and Saul's deaths at Gilboa. He was crippled as a result, and remained crippled. David showed kindness to him, see 2 Sam 9.

v5-8: Baanah and Recah attacked the weak and fearful Ishbosheth. They took advantage of his weakness, and their own right to enter his house. They thought that David would be pleased, "the Lord has avenged my lord the king".

v9-12: David would never use under-hand methods to gain power, he waited for God's timing (1 Sam 26.10). He held no grudge against his enemies, and was always ready to forgive their wrongs. Such is an example for us, and a picture of Christ, who is quick to forgive, and to receive sinners.
