Bible Notes Online - 2-Samuel 21 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: David faced a further problem, that of famine. David's first resort was to prayer.

Saul had killed the Gibeonites, in spite of Joshua's promise (Josh 9.16-27). Saul had zeal for Israel and Judah, but his zeal was not according to righteousness.

v3: David went to the Gibeonites to settle the issue. His promise was open, and generous. But he had to remove the judgment that had fallen on Israel.

v4-6: The Gibeonites asked for seven of Saul's descendants to be killed. David could hardly say 'no', given his promise.

v7-9: David gave them the two sons of Rizpah, and the seven of Merab.

v10-14: Rizpah's actions of mourning clearly touched David. David, being of a spiritual and sensitive conscience, recognised the same in others.

David acted honourably in bringing Saul and Jonathan and the seven sons of Saul's family to be buried in Benjamin. God honoured David, and removed the famine.

v15-22: Events that happened of several years, some preceding the rebellions under Absalom and Sheba.

There are four incidents, demonstrating the power of David's men, and showing that attacks from the Philistines continued. The enemy will continue to attack, but we can continue to know victory.
