Bible Notes Online - 2-Samuel 17 - ESV
Commentary

v1-4: Ahithophel also brought advice concerning David; a quick, decisive, battle, to have David killed. No wonder the elders of Israel were impressed. This would probably have been more successful than Hushai's advice.

v5-13: Hushai's advice was very different, bringing the whole nation together. He said that the quick attack would not be successful, for David would be hidden away. He also referred to David's valiant men, each of whom would have given their lives for David. Hushai's high opinion of David and his men remained unchallenged.

v14: Absalom and the elders of Israel preferred Hushai's advice. The Lord was at work in the hearts of these men, to defeat both Ahithophel and Absalom.

v15-16: Hushai passed on to the priests the developments, so that David could be warned.

v17-20: Absalom was given some indication of the secret message being sent to David. He sent servants to Bahurim, but they were out-witted.

v21-22: David reacted quickly to the news, and crossed the Jordan.

v23: Ahithophel lost his esteem amongst men, and this was too much for him. He had no other hope, so he killed himself. Like Judas 1000 years later, he hanged himself.

v24-26: Absalom gathered his army together.

v27-29: Kind provision for David and his men. Even though many had turned against David, God remained faithful, and had preserved followers of David to provide for him. David received kindness from Makir in Lo-Debar, where Mephibosheth had stayed (9.5).
