Bible Notes Online - 2-Samuel 16 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Ziba's provision for David; here is God's continued blessing upon His chosen King.

v3-4: See 19.24-30; Ziba lied about Mephibosheth. Possibly to gain prestige in David's sight. It seems unlikely that the throne could have been given to Mephibosheth, since Absalom had usurped the throne.

v5-8: Shimei was violent in word and in deed, making accusations and throwing stones. The base of Shimei's accusation was that David had killed many of Saul's family, and now that was being returned upon his own head.

v9-10: Abishai's reaction was typical, to kill Shimei there and then. David refused to retaliate, and forbade his me from doing the same. This was another sign of his dependence upon God.

David did not assume that he was always right, 15.25-26, 34-36; he constantly submitted himself to the will of God.

v11-12: David was happy that God had sent Shimei to curse him. He looked to God to bring blessing into his lie.

v13-14: The long and sad journey continued, with the unwelcome attentions of Shimei. They arrived at Bahurim.

v15-17: At the same time, Absalom arrived at Jerusalem, with his entourage. Hushai, as instructed by David, offered his support to Absalom. Although Absalom acknowledged Hushai's loyalty to David, he seemed to think little of such loyalty.

v18-20: We must take Hushai's words at face value. David had no plans to destroy Absalom, but only to defeat the counsel of Ahithophel (15.34). Absalom asked both Hushai and Ahithophel for advice.

v21-23: Ahithophel's advice was first immoral. It seems strange that David should have heeded the advice of such a person. Absalom, lacking David's spiritual character, followed the advice. Absalom's public action was a challenge to the people's loyalty; would they side with him or with David.
