Bible Notes Online - 2-Kings 7 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Continuing from chapter 6, Elisha gave a very specific prophecy about a dramatic change of events. The famine had been severe, so his words seemed impossible; yet he faithfully proclaimed God's words.

v3-4: The four lepers sitting outside the gates. It seemed that death was inevitable. They would have been fed from the scraps from the city, but that was very little.

v5-8: Upon arriving at the Aramean camp, they found it empty, as the Arameans had fled at the sound, they thought, of an advancing army.

v9: The simple lesson; in a day of good news we do not keep silent. The lepers realised they must share their blessings with others.

v10-11: The lepers' news was announced in the palace.

v12: Some are always suspicious of good news; not everyone believed the lepers. In particular, King Jehoram wanted their story to be checked out.

v13: Jehoram's officer used wise words, echoing those of the lepers (v3-4).

v14-16: The words of Elisha, and of the lepers were proved true. The people rejoiced in a miraculous provision.

v17-20: The accuracy of Elisha's words; the officer had doubted his words, and suffered loss, as we was trampled to death as the people rushed out for the spoil.
