Bible Notes Online - 2-Kings 3 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Jehoram (Joram) was the brother of Ahaziah. He persisted in the sins of Jeroboam, and other kings. Yet he destroyed the sacred stone of Baal. There was some restraint to the evil in his life.

v4-5: Moab had paid tribute to Israel; this was due to the political influence of Ahab, and possibly Omri.

v6-7: Jehoshaphat agreed to fight alongside Israel, even though they had persisted in sin; see 1 Kings 22.4.

v8-12: Things had started to go wrong; the journey was long, there was no more water, and battle had not been joined. Jehoshaphat, as previously, asked whether there was a prophet of the Lord.

v13: Elisha's challenge to Jehoram, to go to his parents' prophets, i.e; false prophets, promoting idolatry.

v14: The Lord honoured Jehoshaphat, a man of real love for God.

v15-16: When the music was played the Spirit of God came upon Elisha. This was not recorded as a regular practice. Yet God is not restricted by human methods.

v17: The problem of water was solved, by the ditches.

v18-19: God also promised decisive victory for Israel and Judah over Moab. Thus God would demonstrate His mighty power.

v20: As promised, the water was delivered!

v21-23: The water was also a sign to Moab. It looked like blood, with the reflection of the rising son in it.

v24-27: Moab approached what they thought was a dead army, so the attack from Israel was a surprise. Moab was scattered, and clearly many killed. Their land was devastated, with stones strewn across fields, and trees cut down. The king of Moab sacrificed his own son. Moab returned to their cities defeated.
