Bible Notes Online - 2-Kings 2 - ESV
Commentary

v1-6: The time had come for Elijah to be taken up into Heaven. Elisha wanted to stay with Elijah; there was perhaps an over-dependence on the man. The Lord took Elijah away, so Elisha had to learn to depend on the Lord.

The carious schools of prophets had all heard from God, that Elijah was to be taken away. This indicated that the godly influence in Israel went beyond Elijah and Elisha.

v7-12: The moment of departure. Elijah had been God's chosen man for those difficult days. Although he was not perfect, God had used him to demonstrate to the people, and particularly to the kings, the He was not silent.

Elisha's request was "a difficult thing", a "double portion" of the spirit of Elijah.

v13-14: "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" Such was the way God had blessed and used Elijah, that this phrase was coined. He is the Lord of the living, not of the dead. The Lord continues his work, as His servants are removed.

v15-18: The prophets rightly perceived that the spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha. They were wrong, however, in trying to find Elijah.

Immediately, Elisha performed miracles; see also ch 4-6.

v19-22: For the benefit of the people of Jericho; for many years the healed waters remained, as a sign of this miracle.

v23-25: The young people mocked Elisha, calling his "baldhead", i.e; leper/outcast. The youths were mauled, but not killed; their scars would remain as a sign of God's judgment.

Thus two miracles left signs which would remain visible for the people. See Ps 59.11.
