Bible Notes Online - 2-Kings 11 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Athaliah was, spiritually, an ally of Ahab, lacking love for the true God, and willing to destroy her own family. Jehosheba was quite unlike her, loving God's people, and acting to preserve the true king.

It is hardly surprising that Joash could be hidden in the house of the Lord, as Athaliah would never go there to worship God.

v4-12: God had also raised up Jehoiada, the priest. He was a godly man, a man of leadership, and a supporter of Joash. Through him Joash was protected, and then proclaimed king.

v13-14: Athaliah heard the commotion. Like Jehoram (9.23), she called out "Treason!"

v15-16: Athaliah was put to death.

v17: The people were prepared in their hearts, and were committed to the Lord and to the king.

v18: The temple of Baal, which was in Jerusalem, was also destroyed. Judah's failure to honour God had allowed idolatry and false religion to take root. To turn back to God meant to reject this way. God raised up Jehu in Israel and Joash in Judah, to destroy idolatry; the ministry of Elijah and Elisha was continued by the kings.

v19-21: The land rejoiced and the city enjoyed peace; such was the effect of the accession of Joash.
