Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 32 - ESV
Commentary

v1: The events of this chapter are dealt with in more detail in 2 Kings 18-20. The attack of Sennacherib, the all-conquering Assyrian king, was a test for Hezekiah.

v2-6: Hezekiah took a number of steps to protect Jerusalem; stopping the water supply, repairing the wall, building another wall.

v7-8: It was clear that Hezekiah's confidence was in God; the battle was essentially a spiritual matter, and "with us is the Lord our God"; in this way the people gained confidence.

v9-12: Sennacherib heard what Hezekiah had done, and of his trust in God. His attack was that "Hezekiah is misleading you", claiming that the removal of the high places was a sign of Hezekiah's lack of faith.

v13-15: His message continued, 'your God is no different from the gods of the nations'; this was ignorance of the True and Living God.

v16-17: The verbal attacks on Hezekiah continued; from both Sennacherib and his officers.

v18-19: The Assyrians also spoke to the Hebrew people waiting on the wall of Jerusalem. They confused the God of Jerusalem with those gods that were the work of men's hands.

v20-21: Hezekiah, strengthened by the prophet Isaiah, cried out to the Lord God. The great power of the True God was demonstrated in the annihilation of the Assyrian army. The Lord God vindicated His Name, and He vindicated Hezekiah for his faith in God.

v22-23: The victory over Assyria was a testimony to other nations, and some brought tribute to Judah.

v24-26: See 2 Kings 20. The sign of the sundial brought pride into Hezekiah's heart; he later humbled himself and wrath was averted and delayed. Special experiences from God are not wrong, but we must be careful of pride rising. In Is 22.8-11, success and prosperity encouraged pride; other kings erred in this way also.

v27-30: Hezekiah became very rich, and a man of great exploits.

v31: The Babylonian envoys arrived; this was another test from the Lord God.

v32-33: Hezekiah is remembered for his acts of devotion. He was one of the greatest of all Judah's kings.
