Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 25 - ESV
Commentary

v1-4: Amaziah was an ordinary human; he was obedient in some respects, executing justice, and promoting righteousness. But he did not reign with a loyal heart. The word "loyal" means 'complete' (Heb: SHALEM).

v5: Amaziah's army was much smaller than Jehoshaphat's (17.14-18).

v6-8: To boost his army, Amaziah had hired some from Israel. The man of God brought a warning that the king was not to use Israelite troops, since Israel had departed from God. We are not to rely on the ungodly, even where they claim to belong to Christ.

v9: The cost of obedience, 100 talents; but God is always able to give much more.

v10: The troops from Israel returned in a rage.

v11-12: Amaziah's reduced army was victorious, as God had promised.

v13: Amaziah's obedience brought more cost, as the discharged troops raided Judean cities.

v14-16 Amaziah's folly, in taking the idolatry of Seir, and refusing to heed God's word. He even threatened to kill God's prophet.

Such folly, having trusted in the Lord to bring victory, that Amaziah should then worship gods that had proved useless. This is another indication that Amaziah was a real person. This does speak of the experience of many who claim to know Christ; there is zealous obedience and true faith in some things, but neglect of God's ways, and even outright disobedience in others. No wonder the Psalmist prayed, "give me an undivided heart" (Ps 86.11).

v17-19: Amaziah meddled with trouble, challenging Jehoash, king of Israel.

v20-22: Amaziah ignored the warnings, and faced Jehoash in battle. Jehoash was victorious.

v23-24: Jehoash broke down the wall of Jerusalem; this serious judgment was not at the hands of Gentile invaders, but by apostate Israel. The cause of Christ is damaged much more from enemies within, than from without.

v25-28: After the defeat by Jehoash, Amaziah returned to Jerusalem. The latter part of his reign merits little comment; he departed from the Lord God, but generally maintained a quiet reign, 'keeping his head down'.
