Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 22 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Only Ahaziah was left of Jehoram's family; 21.15.

v2-6: Ahaziah followed his father's bad example. He was influenced by his mother, Athaliah. He had wicked counsellors from the house of Ahab. He went to war alongside his uncle Joram, king of Israel.

Since Joram had been wounded in the battle at Ramoth Gilead, Ahaziah went to see him. His family ties meant he could do little else. This became the means by which he lost his life.

v7-9: Jehu, whom God had raised up to bring judgment against Israel, also killed Ahaziah and his princes. See 2 Kings 9.27-28. The comment is made that Ahaziah was killed because of his godly grandfather Jehoshaphat.

v10-12: Athaliah tried to destroy the royal line, and preserve her own influence. Through Jehosheba, Joash, son of Ahaziah, was protected. Thus the line if David was preserved. Joash's life was protected. We note that Joash was hidden in the temple, a place Athaliah would not enter, since she had no love for the true God.
