Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 19 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Jehoshaphat reached home safely, while Ahab died. Such is the distinction that God puts between those who have faith, and those who do not.

v2: Jehu, the son of Hanani, came to meet Jehoshaphat. Jehu's father had apparently been released from prison (16.7,10), having been put there by Asa. It may have been that Jehoshaphat had him released.

He brought rebuke because of Jehoshaphat's friendship with Ahab. We are not to love those who hate the Lord. Since his life had been preserved, he could learn this important lesson, and put it into practice.

v3: Commendation, since good things were found in Jehoshaphat, and because he had prepared his heart to seek the Lord.

v4-7: Jehoshaphat had been freshly motivated to live God's way, and to encourage the people to do the same. He went out amongst the people, identifying with them, bringing them back to the Lord; their commitment to the Lord had perhaps cooled. There was something in the people of Judah, as in Israel, that led them away from the way of truth.

Jehoshaphat set judges throughout the land; again, he delegated authority. These men had the responsibility to judge righteously.

v8: Other leaders were appointed in Jerusalem; Levites, priests, head of the families, to administer justice.

v9-10: Again, Jehoshaphat emphasised the need to be faithful to the Lord. Sin, in whatever form, had to be exposed and dealt with; sin could not be condoned, otherwise there would come wrath and guilt.

v11: Jehoshaphat appointed Amariah and Zebediah to oversee the administration of justice.
