Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 15 - ESV
Commentary

v1-7: The Lord sent encouragement through His prophet Azariah.

v1: The true prophet was inspired and anointed by the Spirit of God. He was thus enabled to speak God's words.

v2: A promise and a warning. God's presence would be known to those who seek Him. But God is not mocked; those who forsake Him will be forsaken.

v3: Judah had endured a time of spiritual famine; they had failed to seek God. During the reigns of Rehoboam and Abijah, there was little promotion of spiritual truth. Asa had commanded Judah to seek the Lord God (14.4), and Jehoshaphat, the next king, sent leaders and Levites to teach the people (17.9).

v4: In the time of repentance, it seems, during Asa's reign, God blessed them.

v5-6: Rebellion against God had specific effects; it was not safe to travel, the inhabitants of the land were in turmoil, and there was fighting between different nations.

v7: The encouragement to Asa, not to give up, but to continue to obey God.

v8: Asa was encouraged by the prophecy, and continued his work of reform.  Here he removed evidence of idolatry, and repaired the altar of the Lord.

v9: Many from Israel had come to settle in Judah. We might read in this verse that others had joined from outside ISrael and Judah to worship the true God.

v10-15: The people gathered together to seek the Lord. They sacrificed to God; they sought the Lord whole-heartedly; they threatened to put to death those who would not join with them; they took an oath to the Lord; as a result, they rejoiced. Such a commitment to God was serious, but also joyful. He was found by them and He gave them rest.

v16: Maachah was the grand-daughter of Absalom (11.21). She married Rehoboam, and her son was Abijah; she had an influence upon Judah; 1 Kings 15.13 refers to the obscene image she had made. Asa was clearly right to remove her from her position.

v17: No man is perfect; Asa did not remove the high places from Israel, although he had removed them from Judah (14.5).

v18: Asa gained wealth for his people, and brought treasures into the temple of the Lord God.

v19: 20 years of peace, from v10. This was an indication of God's blessing upon His people.
