Bible Notes Online - 1-Kings 5 - ESV
Commentary

v1-6: Solomon's plan and initiative to build the temple. The friendship with Hiram, king of Tyre, provided for the building of the temple.

Solomon mentioned the reason that David was not allowed to build the temple, "the wars waged...from all sides"; Solomon did not attribute blame to David. Rather he was grateful that David had the vision of a house for God, and that he had already provided much material (see 1 Chr 28-29).

There were now no adversaries nor disasters, all enemies had been defeated, compare 1 Cor 15.25-26.

v7-12: Agreement was reached between Solomon and Hiram, cedars were bought for food, for several years. The on going peaceful relations between the two ensured the provision continued.

v13-16: The labour force worked in shifts, with overseers. 2 Chr 2.17-18 indicates that the workers were aliens, not Israelites.

v17-18: The foundations were made of quality stone; unseen but vital, compare Rev 21.19.

Much of our lives are unseen by others, yet essential in maintaining spiritual growth and promoting effective service. Within the church too there must be proper foundations, as laid down in Acts 2.42.
