Bible Notes Online - 1-Kings 3 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Like David (2 Sam 3.3), Solomon made an alliance by marriage. This was however the thin end of the wedge for Solomon; a treaty with Egypt, and the marriage to Pharaoh's daughter (Deut 7.2-4; Ezra 9.2-4). Egypt always brought Israel into bondage.

v2-3: Sacrifices were still being made at the high places; this was not of itself a serious problem, but contributed to later rebellion, when the high places were misused and became places of idolatry. The temple was built to remove the need for high places.

v4-6: While Solomon was worshipping God at the high place, God spoke to him. It was at Gihon, the most important high place, that Solomon had been anointed king, 1.38-40.

v7-9: Solomon realised the great task facing him, and his own weakness to fulfil that task, "I am only a little child"; he came with humility, and looked to God to meet his needs rather than satisfy his desires. His request was for "a discerning heart", so that he could lead the people wisely.

v10-14: The Lord approved of Solomon's attitude and request. He could have asked for many different things, yet his concern was unselfish and wise. God granted him much more than he asked, "both riches and honour". The blessing of God upon Solomon and Israel became a testimony to the nations.

v15: Solomon returned to Jerusalem, and offered sacrifices before the ark of God.

v16-28: Solomon used his God-given wisdom in a specific situation. The fact that the women were prostitutes was reflected in Solomon's apparently harsh judgment. They were not worthy of mercy. The incident manifested Solomon’s wisdom, and this became public knowledge. Interestingly this first proof of his wisdom was in a very personal situation, not a major governmental decision, or military strategy.

We have confidence in the gospel of Christ, the greater than Solomon, which answers all needs of all people.
