Bible Notes Online - 1-Kings 15 - ESV
Commentary

v1-8: Abijah followed the poor example of Rehoboam. There was continued conflict between Jeroboam and the southern kingdom of Judah.

The Lord God granted mercy to Jerusalem because of David.

v9-10: Abijah's son was Asa. He reigned for 41 years. His grandmother, Abijah's mother, was Maacah, daughter of Absalom. She had promoted idolatry; and it was wise of Asa to remove her.

v11-12: Asa was not perfect, but he made an effort to improve the nation; he was the first of the reforming kings, and laid a foundation for Jehoshaphat to follow (22.41, 50). Between them, Judah enjoyed 66 years of comparative stability.

In contrast, the same period marked a time of instability for Israel. There were seven kings; Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri, Omri, Ahab, Ahaziah; apart from Omri (and possibly Ahab), this was a time when no dynasty continued; some died dishonourable deaths.

v13: A challenge to family loyalties; Asa was courageous in removing Maacah as queen mother.

v14: Asa's heart was loyal to the Lord.

v15: Asa enriched the nation, bringing wealth into the temple of the Lord.

v16-17: Asa continued to experience conflict from Israel.

v18-22: Asa's response was surprising. He enlisted the help of Ben-hadad, king of Aram (Syria), sending him much of the wealth he had gained. The scheme worked, in that Ben-hadad attacked Israel, and Asa was able to destroy Ramah.

v23-24: See 2 Chr 16.12; Asa was diseased in his feet, because of his personal sin.

v25-34: Although Nadab, Jeroboam's son, became king after him, he was soon killed by Baasha. Baasha went further, and killed the whole family of Jeroboam, as had been prophesied by Ahijah (14.10). Although Baasha was not of Jeroboam's line, he followed his example, in doing evil in the sight of the Lord.
