Bible Notes Online - 1-Chronicles 27 - ESV
Commentary

v1-15: There were divisions of the army, serving in 12 divisions of 24,000 each. Each was led by a mighty man;

  • Jashobeam, son of Zabdiel (1 Chr 11.11);
  • Dodai the Ahohite (1 Chr 11.12);
  • Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, with Ammizabad (1 Chr 11.22);
  • Asahel, brother of Joab, then Zebediah after he had been killed (1 Chr 11.26);
  • Shamhuth the Izrahite (1 Chr 11.27);
  • Ira, the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite (1 Chr 11.28);
  • Helez, the Pelonite (1 Chr 11.27);
  • Sibbecai, the Hushathite (1 Chr 11.29);
  • Abiezer the Anathothites (1 Chr 11.28);
  • Maharai the Netophathite (1 Chr 11.30);
  • Benaiah the Pirathonite (1 Chr 11.31);
  • Heldai the Netophathite (1 Chr 11.30).
  • All of these men were true Israelites, and all had proved themselves in combat. Thus the leaders were from the Lord's people, and were men of strength and example. Spiritual leadership must be entrusted to spiritual men, who have proved themselves, and maintain a godly example.

    v16-22: There were leaders over each of the tribes of Israel.

    v23-24: Reference to David ordering the counting of the people (ch 21; 2 Sam 24). David's decision contradicted God's promises to multiply Israel.

    v25-31: There were also those overseeing a range of other matters, caring for David's property, see 28.1; "officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons."

    v32-34: David's 'inner team' of trusted officials. These were closest to David, and presumably involved in main decisions of policy.
